What to Eat?

Sometimes I feel like I'm on a merry-go-round; I'm so bored of eating the same foods again and again. This feeling comes and goes, but when it's here, I feel like I can't get off the carousel.

Anonymous recently posted that they have trouble coming up with what to eat. There are times that I have this problem too. I think it happens, for me, when I'm bored with my food and I'm not having enough variety. This boredom was the case for me before I was on the program, so imagine it will be something I'll encounter many times again.
I'm working on a post about what I eat, by looking at what's inside my refrigerator. I hope to have that piece up by the end of this week. Meanwhile, here's a quick list of some of the things I eat:

Protein
  • meatloaf
  • chicken (hot, cold, with sauce, made into chicken salad)
  • hamburgers with grilled onions
  • Filet Mignon Roast
  • pork chops
  • sausage patties and links
  • ham by the slice
  • ham and pickle salad (from the deli, still working on perfecting my home made version)
  • spare ribs (generally I eat them out, but have Trader Joe's ribs in the freezer)
  • Teriyaki (beef or chicken)
Veggies eaten with protein
  • roasted butternut squash
  • corn
  • cauliflower
  • coleslaw
  • cucumber and dill with onion (from the deli)
  • peas
  • celery
What about the rest of you - what does your list of favorites look like? What do you do when you're bored with your foods?

BTW, do any of you remember if yogurt and cottage cheese are considered protein or if we need to eat them with protein?

Also, see my What's for Breakfast? post from Nov. 14, 2011 and the list of links to a handful of recipes.

Beans

Anonymous also asked if we are allowed beans. No beans while we're in the weight loss phase. I sometimes get three bean salad at the deli and I pick out the kidney beans before I start eating. I never would have thought I'd miss eating kidney beans! When we reach our goal weight, we can eat anything we want by keeping things balanced; i.e., maintaining our weight.

  1. I am pretty sure yogurt and cottage cheese need to be eaten with protein. I could be wrong, please correct me if I am.

    shrimp cocktail

saucy shrimp (melt butter brown onion, add crushed garlic, add shrimp and a few tablespoons of milk or cream bearing in mind ratios)

scrambled eggs with ham and sometimes cheese, and veggies (onion, peppers, toms, salsa, mushrooms, spinach or whatever you like)

chopped ham and pickle with mayo

    deviled eggs

    egg salad

    ribs with unsweetened bar-b-que sauce

    chicken with bar-b-que sauce

pork chops with seasoning baked or grilled

    kielbasa with sourkraut

beef jerky I keep in my pocketbook

imitation crab with cocktail sauce or heated up with a little cheese and maybe make stuffed mushrooms with it

    grilled steak

leftover grilled steak with some gravy and mushrooms and onions

pulled pork with unsweet bar-b-que sauce

egg casseroles: eggs, cheese, ham, bacon, sausage and veggies baked in the oven

I LOVE butternut squash 'french fries'

that is all I can come up with off the top of my head. Will post more as I think of them.

all of the above I do keeping in mind the veggie/protein ratio and also the fat content

then a thin layer of salsa
they a small amount of taco cheese mix on top

Love this blog! I went to Julie in late Oct/Nov and started wearing size 18/20 pants now down to size 14. Getting positive comments all the time. My personal trainer (who I have been seeing for 3 years) is TOTALLY blown away! Amazing!
I can't remember if we need to eat yogurt (I eat Siggis that Julie recommnends) and cottage cheese with meat. I do recall Julie saying we can have milk without meat. I use cottage cheese (i like Friendship 1% fat whipped) like I would mayo, for tuna and canned salmon salad, for example.

I am personally making an effort to eat less processed meat, though I do love bacon!!! Also try to eat more chicken, turkey and fish. I always have canned tuna and wild salmon available and a few cans at work if i am hungry. I like to cook a turkey breast and munch on it during the week, or get a rotisserie chicken that I have for several meals.
I am really on a kale kick right now - steamed or homemade kale chips. I go to the winter markets and get carrots (super sweet this time of year) and some beets. i roast up veggies (brussels sprouts, squash, carrots, onions, whatever) with balsamic vineger, and have that hot or cold. I almost neverhad salads anymore.
I make a lot of stews and chili in my crockpot - just made a yummy chili with beef chuck, portobello mushrooms onions and carrots, with tomato paste, chipotles chili powder.

  4. From what I remember, yogurt and cottage cheese have to be eaten with meat. I remember when I was walking out of my 3rd class and I was looking at the Siggi's container and told her I was so happy to be able to have yogurt and she said what do you have to have with it, equal amounts of what? So I eat my cottage cheese and yogurt with meat. I am sure she said Milk is the only 'free' food.

Sounds like you are doing good!! Congrats!!

I don't eat much salads anymore either. I like the actual vegetables. Salad is to hard to judge how much for me, plus I ate so much salad on weight watchers, I just feel freer without it.

Keep on posting! I LOVE reading what others have to say or how they are doing!!!

  5. I found out the hard way....yogurt only twice a week, with meat, and never two days in a row! I apparently missed the part about 2x week, and was having yogurt every day! I felt a difference~ weight loss slowed down for sure!

Can we have flavored yogurt or just plain

  6. We only can have plain yogurt except for Siggi's. I'm not clear why, but even if I can have this treat twice a week (with protein), I'm not complaining.

why isnt CHobani yogurt allowed? IT has tons of protein, and why Siggi's, Ive never even heard of it, where do you get it?

  8. We can have Chobani, but it can only be plain yogurt. I hadn't heard of Chobani until Julie introduced it to us in one of the classes. I also hadn't heard of Siggis until she told us about it in another class about six months later.

Yogurt must be eaten with protein; it cannot be eaten alone. You can only have it up to twice a week. You don't have to eat yogurt ever.

You can buy Siggis at Stop N Shop and Big Y. If your store doesn't offer it, ask the manager if they can stock it.

Like many things on this program, I don't always know the reason why.

I love chobani, I used to eat it every day. Julie hasnt mentioned we can have yogurt yet. I had 2 sessions. Maybe she will go over that in sessions 3. Do slim jims count as protein. I never eat them but if I need a snack are they allowed? Im genaerally not hungry but sometimes when I am I dont feel like eating a whole "meal" and would like an acceptable option for a snack. Julie said there is no snacking but sometimes I may feel a tad hungry but not enough to toss a pork chop on the grill and fry up some veggies. Know what I mean? thank you for your input.

Apparently, Siggis yogurt is from grass fed cows. (...remember that whole "free-range" is better for us) That was why we could have Siggis and no other yogurt. I would swear, in our class I remember her saying it was the only kind of yogurt we could have. AND we had to eat it with meat.

    Other food ideas:
    Taco meat on salad
Taco meat on cauliflower crust pizza
Tuna fish mixed w/ mayonaise & onions or relish.
Tuna stuffed fresh tomatoes - great in the summer.
zuchini lasagna (no pasta in it)
Zuchini 'fries' and carrot stick 'fries' (baked in over in olive oil and seasonings of your choice)
zuchini & yellow squash sauted with onions and a little butter.
roasted cauliflower (w/garlic) (have also added onions at times)
On the go - - take slices of salami, turkey, ham, or roast beef in a baggie w/ raw carrots or celery or radishes or peppers...etc
chicken breast grilled (after marinating in good seasons dressing or Terriaki or bbq sauce)
chicken rolled around a bit of cheese and slice of ham... sauted breifly on both sides to hold shape then baked (no bread crumbs. Season the outside of the chicken breasts before cooking.)

I run out of ideas too and it feels like i'm always having the same thing over and over. I am always looking for new ideas/recipes. :)

For those wondering about yogurt, I distinctly remember Julie saying yes on Cottage cheese with meat and "NO YOGURT....NO YOGURT"!

    ReplyDelete
  11. This program evolves over time, so if you heard Julie say no yogurt, then you should follow what she told your group. In my group, we were told we could have Siggis yogurt, including the fruit flavors, providing we had it with meat and that we only have 2 yogurts per week.

In my group, like yours, she said cottage cheese with meat is allowed.

Thanks for all the ideas!! I make a beanless chili with ground hamburg/turkey and add mexicorn, taco seasoning, sauteed onion and spinach or kale. It's delicious!

We were told the only yogurt we could have was Siggi's. The only flavors we could have were Blueberry, Orange with Ginger, and Vanilla. We had to eat meat with it though equal or greater than the amount of yogurt.
