Off-Program

On May 28, 2012 Anonymous posted this question about how to get back on program:Help! I went off program this weekend! Do I need to go back in or can I try to fix it on my own?
Are you on or off program, because there isn't a third option here.
Jennifer responded to this post:

Hi Anonymous-The question that you posed is a tough one. From what Julie told us in refresher classes was if you go off program, you really need to go back and see her. Especially if you ate sugar. You need to also figure out why you did it, and if you did it willingly. If you ate flour and sugar, then I would get a refresher asap. She wants you to use the tricks she has taught us (I don't wanna want it, self-hypnosis etc.) so that you don't willingly go off her program. Good luck!!!!

What I remember most about this is that you want to do three days of meat, meat, meat, to get the sugars out of your system and break the desire for sugar. Jennifer is correct about telling yourself "I don't want to want it" to help you break the cycle of eating sugar. This is something we need to teach ourselves, so we don't have to always go back for a refresh. Eventually we will stop seeing Julie, so I would try this method and see if you can get back on program, but you may want to schedule a refresh and if you are able to get back on-program before the refresh, you can always call and move the refresh to a later date.

Also--call the office and ask them for advise.

What experience in getting back on program do others have that they're willing to share?

What if you eat something that has either flour or sugar but you didn't know it did....or you find out after that it did?

or if you "gasp" got on the scale? I slipped up..obviously this was intentional, but it was a moment of weakness. nothing seemed to be fitting looser after 6 weeks on program and I was SO frustrated. i was pleasantly surprised at the scale results, but am absolutely sick with regret that i did it.

  2. Sometimes when we eat out we have food that has flour or sugar in it and we're not aware. If you didn't know something had flour or sugar, don't focus on it - move on. We don't read labels for this reason. We are allowed ketchup and sauces that contain sugar. We do the best we can and avoid things that say include words like "honey-flavored" or "sweet..." or anything that strongly suggests it contains sugar.

  3. Going off program....

I have a lot of experience with this. I started in July of 2011. I was strict, strict, strict until Thanksgiving, when I hit my first goal size of 10-12(12), and we were going to Disney three days later. Once we were back from Disney(Julie says-go on vacation and have fun. The minute you pack your bags you're back on plan), too many days had passed of sugar. So I had a refresher January 18. I was off for a full two months. During that time, I gained the 5-7 lbs she says we will fluctuate. I was back to being strict again. And then my aunt died suddenly. There were two days I went off(wake/funera), but even then, I didn't over eat like I used to. I went right back on program. When my aunt died, I was a size 12. Not even four weeks later, my grandmother suddenly passed away. Again, off program for about three days. I lost two very important people in my life in a short span. However I went right back on program. For my grandmothers funeral, I was down to a size 10. So in those three weeks I went down another size. Then I had my birthday, off program for a day or two. Right back on. I'm now in a size 8. I'm happy where I am. I too have also stepped on the scale. But it has the opposite effect with me. It makes me work harder than ever to get to my goal. I'm in my goal size, albeit, I'd like it to be a bit more loose. Lol. My doctor wants me to lose another 20-30 lbs. We will see. Personally, I'd like to lose about 15 more lbs and call it a day. I haven't had a refresher since January, and put it off til June, and I probably will put it off again.

I'm still losing. Julie doesn't want us to rely on her. I have my cheat days, and then I'm back to being strict. But don't forget, I'm in my goal size. And, I'm happy where I am. Even if that's a size10. I'm thrilled. But I also had Julie add exercise to me. That makes a huge difference! I run three to four times a week. So, when I do have those days where I've been off program, I've gone to the gym and worked that much harder.

My husband's cousin is getting married in July. Five weeks. I'm going to bust my chops to lose 15 more lbs. I want to be on display. Lol. I bought a dress. I don't do dresses. Ever. My wedding and weddings I was in are the only times I wear a dress-five times in over ten years. That dress is hanging up on my bedroom door. I will work, and work hard at it. In the fall, I may schedule a refresher. Or, I will schedule one once I'm at another goal-whatever that is. I know someone who has seen Julie. Julie told her to stop going to refreshers-she knows the program. She can do it. And she has all these years.

I'm actually proud of myself for still being able to stick with it. And saying no. I hosted a big memorial day weekend gathering with my family. It's three days of non stop eating. Lots of veggies and meat though! On Tuesday, I threw out the leftover goodies. It pained me in away because they were oh so amazing, but, I did it. In the trash it went and it felt good when it was all said and done.

Long story short, I wouldn't rush for a refresher just yet. Do it on your own. If you find you are losing control, then call and schedule one. Have faith in yourself. Set a goal of some sort. Once you get by those three days of meats/veggies, why would you want to mess that up? I have faith it can be done!!

Try it, and then post back if you were able to or not. And good luck! You've got this!

  4. twinglesmomma, I'm sorry to hear your grandmother and aunt passed.

I appreciate hearing how you were able to get back on program on your own and how you put off a refresh because you've been able to do this without one. Once we all learn this, Julie's wait list will shorten, but as you said, it is Julie's intent that we learn to maintain our weight and get back on program on our own instead of needing her the rest of our lives.

Your story is inspiring. Thank you for sharing your story with us and showing us how to get through difficult times.

I WOULD GO BACK IN WHEN YOU CAN...I had about 5 slips nad each time I went back ...................
Can someone speak to this before I throw in teh towel! I am so beyond frustrated with this program..I am at a loss..I began on July 19, 2011..I was a tight size 12...by August I was a loose 10 ...by Sept. a size 8.....My original goal size was a size 8...In August I ate peanuts...REFRESHER...IN SEPTEMBER.......I was fine until OCTOBER..Halloween Candy..Refreshed again....Thanksgiving..Refreshed again...Chrismas..refreshed again..all while remaining at this GD size 8.............................I went back 7 weeks ago..Committed, gave over my free will, Told her about the pattern I created to go off every 4 weeks, she corrected that told me what to do..ETC! I was so positive. I am working out 6 days a week. I did a half Marathon in March..........I am eating protein and vegetables...adn 2 siggis a week with meat.......I have some cheese in my salads or in omelets....but notalone or wiht meat. I cannot get past this ..I am NOT losing ..I just wantt o get down one more size...a 1/2 a size....What is missing and what can I do..I am 7 weeks in from that refresher and I DON"T UNDERSTAND how I could not be losing..Of course my husband thinking I eat too many calories because I have bacon, ham and sausage and eat alot of chicken wings but I don't think that calories matter??????????????? I did accidentally see my weight at the doctor's office...They wrote it down and I saw it..But, that's it! At my last visit she told me that my mind is ready to own it..She told me to get past the 4 week mark and I OWN IT>>>>>>Now I Am at 7 weeks and I still haven't dropped....so what does that mean??? Or what do I do to shake this damn weight off.....
I keep wanting to will myself to only eat steamed chicken and vegetable but I cannot do that, either! Please give me some words of wisdom here...For me to go to a refresher take the Entire Day sine I live in SOutheastern Massachusetts.I Am so sorry I keep crying out on other people's threads but I am not sure how to start my own ??

  6. Stop the bacon, the ham, chicken wings, sausage. The bacon, ham, and sausage are fatty meats. Eat those sparingly! I'm talking once or twice a week. Granted, I may or may not sometimes as well. But when I read that, that's the first thing that came to mind. You seem to be eating fatty proteins. When I'm in a pinch, I will eat hotdogs, but that's not an everyday occurrence. Have more lean protein-chicken, turkey, etc. Have beef-steak, burgers, to maybe once or twice a week. And, if you are having bacon, etc, make sure that's your only fat for the day.

I know she's mentioned somewhere along the lines to have one meal with just meat, no veggies. Also, make sure you are not eating more veggies than meat. My guess is if you were to go in for a refresher, she would mention the quality of the meat.

Oh-and add sprints to your workout. ;) I'm starting mine tomorrow. :)

All this info is great to hear. So far I have been staying on the program, but the weight loss has slowed a bit. The advice about limiting the bacon, ham, & sausage is great. That could be my problem. I have only been on the program for 6 weeks and down almost 2 sizes. I surprise myself at the recipes I put together (Pinterest has great low carb options) and the food at picnics I leave alone. I do plan on scheduling a refresher by the end of the summer if I can. It was good to hear that she will help you with your exercise too. Thanks everyone for the great info. Don't give up to those struggling.

Thank you Twingles..I re-read your previous post..It's gotta be a cut it out fresh start!!!! No more bacon, ham, sausage or chicken wings......I appreciate your reply so very much! I should change my name from anonymous to "CRY BABY!"
ps..One thing concerns me about the sizes..The sizes TODAY are much smaller than they were 10 years ago..I have 2 pairs of jeans from my 20's..One is a size 11/12 and one is a size 13...And they both fit me now..I would buy them in the store but hey are a little loose...I am currently a size 8...So, that is not actually accurate..Julie is so key on sizes.....and not weight..But, Now, I wonder if this is why...You weigh more but you are a smaller size not because you have turned fat into muscle but because the sizes have changed..In my 20's I was a size 8 but today that would be a 6 that is why I really want to get to a 6 or a loose 8....Julie said she was a size 10 before when she weighed what she weighs now and now she is a size 6..(after surgery too) I think it's related to the change in clothing sizing not the change in our body size! ANy one else related to this?

    1. I've been on the program since February and haven't cheated. Wasn't exactly sure what size I was wearing then but all my clothes are very baggy no so I now I have lost. One thing you said that interested me was about exercise. I have a surgically repaired knee which has never been the same since and an extremely bad ankle which make walking very difficult. I have tried to do a little stationary biking, but am pretty much motionless for most of the day which I know is not good. Does Julie have some magic which can put a thought in your head to exercise? I really don't have the $200 for a refresher at the moment and really had no intention of ever going to one, however, if she can work her magic for exercising I would be interested. Also, what is this self hypnosis you spoke of? Again, as many others have stated - different classes receive different info. Any help would be appreciated.

    2. Diana, I am not really a exercise person but I did start taking a Water Zumba class which really helps loose the last of the weight loss. The next day you dont ache and it really improved the extra skin that was hanging there from losing the weight. I go to a health club in Feeding Hills Ma but all the local YMCA's or have water exercise/dance too. Good luck.

  9. I will speak to the exercising part. September 2011 was my first refresher. It was there that I said I wanted to keep going, I was doing great on the diet, etc, but I wanted her to add exercise for me, so she did. She does say she puts it in everyone, but I would definitely ask for it.

So, it took me two months, lol, but I finally joined the gym. And I started off by walking. Then one night while there, I was thinking, while watching The Biggest Loser, what am I getting out of this?? So I downloaded the couch to 5k app to my phone. I started that. On April 28, I ran my first 5k in 33 minutes. I run 9-12 miles/week. I also was doing p90x. I just stopped it yesterday because I was getting discouraged I couldn't do half of it. I wanted something I could do. Luckily, my sister dates a personal trainer/gym owner, so I have a plan of what to follow. So now my exercising will consist of sprints three days a week and weight training the other three.

I also have a wedding coming up which my husband is in, and I bought a dress for it. Five weeks to get the last 10-15 lbs off!

Good luck! Save up for a refresher, or, tell yourself you can't afford it and will yourself to do it on your own! :)

  10. This post has been so great for me and all the responses too! I started in January and have lost 3 solid sizes and haven't gone off program...meaning no sugar, potatoes or carbs of any kind so I thought the weight should be "melting" off. I realized that I might be having the fatty meat too often. That changed the minute I read this post.

Also, the biggest challenge I have is with breakfast. During the week while at work my meals are very similar day to day. I try to change up the meat and I think the meat/veggie ratio is fine but I keep hearing Julie saying "don't eat the same thing all the time".

Also because of carrying this weight all my life my knees are not great and the exercise that is best for me is the stationery bike, which I started faithfully a month ago. I do 15 miles/day most days (1/2 morning, 1/2 after work)and on the weekend I just keep busy doing different house projects.

I have seen changes in myself and people have commented so I know it's working. Most recently someone said to me "your shoulders look smaller"...REALLY!!?? It seems to always start at the top and work it's way down but the top isn't where I need it most! LOL

Any input would be great appreciated.

  11. WOW!!! What GREAT information on these posts!!! Thanks everyone!!

Twingle _ I am so sorry about the losses you have had with important people. To have someone mourn them so much in their passing, for them to be that important to you, is a wonderful legacy for them!

FATTY MEATS!!! AAAAGGGGGHHHH!!!! That is my problem too!! I eat so much redmeat. I actually crave it!! All my weight watchers years I ate to death chicken breasts, I can hardly choke them down now!!!! Since reading about fatty meats I am revamping my meats. Is pork better? not bacon, but chops, roasts? I can eat chicken thighs, but it is the red meat my body is craving. I denied myself that so much in the past, that red meat tastes soooooooo good right now!!! Plus it is so easy to just throw a hamburger on the grill then make chicken.

I am tuna fished out too thanks to weight watchers!!! GGGRRRRRR!!!!

I am really going to have to use some mind control and imagination to limit my redmeats. Sausage, bacon are not a problem, ham from the deli is though!

I can not believe all the good advice here! THANK YOU ALL SOOOO VERY MUCH!!!

The exercise is greatly lacking in my life and looks like I need to get on that band wagon too! I have always hated it and still do. We have a pool and this morning I looked up exersizes to do in the pool so as soon as I can I will be doing those in the water.

THANK YOU THERESA FOR STARTING THIS BLOG!!!!!!!
