1 Year of Maintenance

This month marks one year that I have been working on maintenance, and nothing is going to take this achievement away from me. I wanted to touch on a few things that have pushed me along on this 1 year milestone.

First of all, this is the first time in my life that the word "maintenance" has been used for longer than 5 minutes. I achieved the use of the same word when I was with Weight Watchers, but they couldn't stop the food from talking to me, and the food won over again. I now know the power of this word. Extreme power! And there is not one food out there that is going to take this word away from my vocabulary!

If you think of food from an alcoholics point of view, and find it in yourself to tell yourself "most food is poison", and use Julie's help, then you can push these "bad" things away.

The MOST important thing I have been working on this year? Please read on!

Stress will be around every corner, and I use whatever the situation is as a "test". I say to myself "I am being tested" and for the first time in my life, I am pushing through and passing these "tests"! You have to somehow find your strength to be able to say "I am being tested, and I am going to win, come out on top, not give in, push it away", then the tests become fewer and farther between. It will always be around us, these "tests". It is how one accepts the "ism"  (foodaholism, how is that?!?!?!) so that you don't feel like you failed. It truly comes from within, and the more you empower yourself, the less the food will talk to you.

The second most important thing I have learned?

When I go on vacation, whether it be for a night, a weekend, a week, I CANNOT, WILL NOT stray from what Julie has simply given me to use every day. It isn't as if the journey has changed because I am not sleeping in my own bed. I did that my whole life. And it got me squat! Well, what it did was get me pre-diabetes and high blood pressure. And I don't want the food to start talking to me again.

Why?  I am a food addict!  I am addicted to food! IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!!! I would also not "drink a drink" while on vacation if I was an alcoholic. Do you think I would be able to stop at just one if I had a problem with alcohol? Would it be ok if the person I was on vacation with knew I was an alcoholic and said "oh come on, you can do it-Just one drink!" Is that ok? Not for me. I know people have said that Julie has told them "when you pack your bags, then get back on". Well, I have never heard that. In fact, I heard the opposite. At my refresher last September, I heard her say that she would never tell someone that, and she doesn't know where that came from! So, if it was said, then IT WASN'T FOR ME. Because I NEVER HEARD IT. This is part of my SACRIFICE AND FREE WILL. And why the heck would I want to cave in to something that makes me feel disgusted and guilty when I can eat an entire steak and a whole lobster if I want to?!?!?!

This is why Julie's behavior modification plan is different from everyone else. She has been able to push the food talk away from us by giving us tools to use, and her talking to our cells. It can and does work. I know it is hard to look at other people and say "they can eat the fucking food (pardon me please, but I have thought it that way, so that is what I am going to write) SO why can't I?" Why do I have to have an addiction? Why was I wired this way? Whine Whine Whine!!!!!! I no longer do that. I smile, eat my pepperoni or my tuna, and say, Damn I Look Good in My Size 6 Levis!!!! I continue to follow this journey to the best of my ability. I say no thank you when I need to, and don't think another thought about it. My commitment is still 100%!!!!!

My chains have been lifted. FOOD no longer controls ME.  I CONTROL IT!!!!!!!!

Happy One Year of Maintenance to Me!!!!

Yet another inspiring post! My journey has just begun and so far so good. Is it weird that it hasn't even been a week but I already feel less "bloated"? My husband has even told me that he thinks my face is already thinner! I find so much support and so many ideas from reading this blog. Thank you! I read tht there is a Facebook page that one needs to be invited to. How would I go about getting an invitation?

    1. Add a reply here with your FB name, only I will see your message because I won't publish it. I'll send you instructions.

The FB account is not run by or affiliated with Julie. I's not my group either. It's a group of people who follow her program who seek to support one another. It's a private group, so yes, you need to be invited.

Hello everyone! I have a question... I've been on the program close to 2 months now. I drank half and half in my coffee not knowing...does this delay my process? I have been working so hard :(

    4. Julie told us if we ingest something without intention and then stop...it is ok cuz your body knows you did not mean to. She said we should have milk not cream or half and half. I heard that others who finished earlier heard differently (i finished nov. 28). You might enjoy canned evaporated milk as it is very creamy.

God what a great, great post Jennifer!!!! Every word speaks to me. And it is a perfect time for me to hear it, to give myself that extra umph to push through to the next stage in this amazing journey.

I am 100 percent sure that Julie NEVER advised people that they could leave the program behind when they are on vacation. As you say, what an utterly absurd idea. What may well have happened is that someone had screwed up while on vacation, and she told them to just get back in the river. And then others interpreted that to mean some bizarre permission.

I too have a lifetime of an addicted relationship to/with food, and see it in exactly the same way as I saw giving up smoking...I can't have a single cigarette EVER AGAIN. Of course this is much more complicated, because we can't swear off eating, but we can swear of toxic foods and toxic thought and behavior patters.

GOOD FOR YOU JENNIFER!!! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION!

Great to hear , gives me strength . Thanks Not sure what you where saying about when you pack your bags get back on? Does that mean when you go on vacation to stay on program? I would think. I'm sure going to try to stay on program while away to the hot tropics. Hope they have plenty of meats and veggies. My wedding ring that I had enlarged last year is now falling off , back to the jewler. Think ill get a second ring just to hold it on , a reward.

    1. Hi Anonymous-Some people have said that they have heard Julie say it's ok when on vacation to "stray", maybe not "stay on program". I myself never heard her say this, especially to me, because she knows it would be too dangerous for me. I know that I would have a really hard time getting "back in the river". So, long story short (yeah, right!) I follow what I have learned from Julie no matter where I am or what I am doing. I encourage everyone to do exactly what they heard from Julie-----Congratulations on following her program! It is an awesome journey! Enjoy your vacation!!!!

Anonymous-congratulations on having to go back to the jeweler! Just a note about language and what it tells the brain/body....how about telling yourself that while you are on vacation you are GOING TO STAY ON PROGRAM, rather than that you are going to try your hardest. Don't mean to push, but when we start to open up even these little windows in our habit driven minds we can be setting ourselves up for trouble. Or at least that's what happens for me.

  4. Congratulations on your first year of maintenance! I'm so proud of you Jennifer. You are leading the way by example for the rest of us, both on your weight loss journey and on maintenance.

During your weight loss phase, you owned the program by embracing and following everything to the t of what Julie taught you. What I learned from you is that if we don't mess with what Julie teaches us, oh my, it really works! And it weight comes off steadily when we stick to the rules, No grey areas, no exceptions. No twisting what we heard Julie say. No justifying ourselves into believing we can have X because other studies show...

I love the positive attitude change you've made in your life with dealing with stress. You take it on as a test. You expect the outcome to be successful! The outcome is successful with this kind of thinking! You are living proof.

Inspired by you, I am embrace this attitude starting today!

I have tried to avoid being a whiner during this weight loss, but I have caught myself (as you know from our recent conversation) looking ahead justifying what I'm going to eat when I reach maintenance.

Shut up! Get there first, which will take a few more months, then follow the directions and embrace those lifestyle changes too. Why am I thinking I can do things different on maintenance and be successful. Besides, my focus today should be getting to maintenance. Meanwhile, any thoughts about what I'll do then (outside the program guidelines) are leading me down a path I don't want to go.

I can't wait until I can join you in your song "Woohoo - one year of maintenance!"

Thanks for helping me get this thinking back in line. And thanks for sharing your journey with the rest of us!

    1. Does shopping online for clearance stuff count as a celebration? ;-) I am seeing my soon-to-be reduction in the boob department, and possible lipo in the belly as my true maintenance celebration. Oh, I also got my hair colored and restyled a bit today too------

    2. Yes, I would say all of the above count as celebrations! Woohoo. Can't wait to see you soon and get updates.

Thanks a million for doing what you do!!Love this blog.. I am new to all this, and was quite skeptical I may add..(started w./Julie 1/18/13).Today I saw my mom for the 1st time(who gave the 3 sessions to me for christmas)and she couldn't believe the weight loss and she is very stingy with compliments lol...I see myself every day,so does my hubby,so this was an uplift for me! My lastsession with Julie is 3/11/13,she was hospitalized and I had to reschedule my last one..What do I expect? Results just like all of you guys, but it will come in it's own way.

  8. Congratulations Laurie for accepting the gift your mother gave you and taking the opportunity to change your life.

You can expect the unexpected! The journey for each of us varies, depending on how much weight we have to lose. You can see this from these blog posts. You can also see a whole lot of life changes have happened.

We all love a happy ending! May your journey too have a happy ending! I'm not at the end (maintenance - there is no real end, as this program is a lifestyle change rather than a diet), but I'm happy with my success and I look forward to reaching my goal size!

Come back and keep us posted on your progress!

  9. Jennifer, You are truly an inspiration!! Congrats on your amazing success. I am so afraid of maintenance and hearing from you has made it a bit less terrifying! It's the bringing back of "before key" foods("BK" as Lou calls it) that scares me. I too am an addict and I NEVER want to go back to that!! I'm not there yet, but when I am, I'll be picking your brain.

Congratulations on your success! I joined Julie in August and it is going well. I've decided to incorporate foods back in and today I ate a potato. I know she said to eat a potato everyday for a week and then go back on the program. But... What then? I can't remember what to do next. Have you brought the food back in?

    Thanks :)

  11. Anon, congratulations on reaching your goal!! I have been on maintenance for over a year. The process is to start with potato (any kind), once a day until your pants start to get snug, then get back into the river. Then you have to do this in the river/out of the river with potato several times before moving on to the next stage. It takes time going back and forth because you are reprograming your body to forget how much weight you lost. Remember, it naturally wants to put all that weight back on, but eventually it will get the message to just add a few pounds and forget the big number. Our weight will always go up and down so we have to train our body to only add a little. But since this is the way we will always eat, how much time this takes doesn't really matter. It's more important to get it right. The stages of maintenance are: potato, rice/grains, flour. Always limit your fats!! I recently attened a refresher and inquired about eating these things "every day". Julie said that it didn't have to be every day but often enough to actually put on weight.
