"You look great!" (Who, me???)

Yesterday at the hair salon something awesome happened.

“Man, you look great! You lost a lot of weight since I saw you last”. Yep, those are the words from a lady I hadn’t seen since just before Christmas. We both had an appointment last night at the same hair salon. My hair stylist was in agreement with her and we went on and on, for the next couple of hours about weight, diets, etc. Both of these ladies are familiar with Julie, not just because of me, but of a co-worker, who had lost, according to my friend, had lost a ton of weight and she kept it off for quite some time now. You know, I know I am losing weight because my clothes fit me again and I just feel it, but to hear it is just such a confirmation. Because of the blog and the support group from Facebook I feel encouraged and committed. Thank you to all of you, support group. I’ve learned so much and I continue to learn more. This is not a diet for me, but a way of living. I am not saying I will never have a glass of Wine again or a piece of cake, but for the most part, I am just fine the way things are with what I can consume. Just keep ad it each day and you will be successful.

  2. Yes! I'm happy that you're getting confirmation that you've lost weight from others! It's good that you've embraced this as a real lifestyle change. I know from those who are on maintenance that this is key. There is no going back to the way we used to eat without gaining the weight back

For those of us who have a lot of weight to lose, like me, it was many months before this happened. When I look back at my photos, which I hope you are taking along the way, I can now see why it took so long for others to see I'd lost weight.

Four months in, I felt like I'd lost a ton of weight and my close friends gave me lots of kuddos. Others didn't say anything for 10-12 months. My dentist noticed after two years.

I once heard someone say so and so has lost weight and looks great. Another person replied, "oh, she does that every few years." People are hesitant to say anything, especially if you were one to yoyo in size.

I often heard things like, "do you have new glasses?" or comments about my hair, which I took as they are noticing a change in me, but can't quite put their finger on what it is. A co-worker once commented on my new coat. I'd had several new coats over the years without hearing this, so I took it as his way of saying he noticed I'd lost weight.

  3. Congratulations Trudy! It helps me to read what you have written. I was definitely seeking "outside confirmation" of my weight loss at a time when I knew I was losing but no one else had yet noticed. Now they are noticing (I finished program Nov. 28) and today my brother finally said my face looked slimmer. Funny how we know we are losing in so many little and measurable ways but still we (I) seem to need the confirmation of others. We social animal humans can't help it I guess. It has helped me to read some other posts by people who did not see their own weight loss - like the mind just denies denies denies and can't accept the fact that something is finally working. Thanks for all the encouragement. Yeah all of us!! Linda Moye
