Question from Rose

This question was posted a few minutes ago on an August 2013 post (Quick Recipes) and in order to help Rose, I'm posting her question so that some of you may be able to answer her questions:
I am new to blogging and not sure if I'm doing it right. I have been on the diet for two months and doing well. I do still have some food questions and how the food combinations effect the body, as well as dynamics of Julie's philosophy. I really enjoyed the sessions and am in awe of her. However, after driving for two hours from Gloucester and attending the night sessions, I tended to space out and not necessarily absorb a lot if the information. I emailed Theresa, but got back some long form letter of encouragement. Is there anyone out there who can help me?  -- Rose

11/13/13 update:
I just read an excerpt from the book Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar - Your Brain's Silent Killers, by Dr. David Perlmutter, which supports a lot of what Julie teaches us. I highly recommend this article. It's available on Amazon and the Kindle price is only $6.62. I devoured the article, so I may have to buy the Kindle version! -- Theresa

  1. Not sure how to respond Rose, because I don't know what your particular food questions are.

If it's something we can't help with, Julie's staff is great about returning phone calls- usually within a day or so.

I'm not an expert on the food dynamics, but I know Julie's done lots of research on it, so when she says it's meat and veggies bite for bite, that's what I'm going to do. I've seen SO many people have great success following Julie's program, that I figure I'll jump on and go for the ride, without worrying about the whys.

Many of us also feel we like don't consciously remember lots of what she told us- I guess that's part of the hypnosis- but she's assured us that she's given our subconscious mind all the tools we need to succeed, so it's OK- don't worry that you don't remember a lot. Somewhere deep in you, you know :)

Hope that helps a little, and feel free to ask questions whenever you'd like. Good luck on your journey!

    Hi Rose

Welcome! Do you, have specific questions you'd like answered? The food combo is meat and veggies in equal proportions. The protein keeps you satisfied and allows your body to heal and lose the weight.

    Hi Rose,

We are all here for any help we can give. None of us remember it all, and you really don't have to. It sounds like you have the basics, and you say you are doing well. Please feel free to ask any time.

  4. Thanks for your response.

I do know the basics of the diet - equal protein/veggies at the same time, no sweets/carbs, etc. However, I find some food allowances and restrictions confusing.

For instance, we can use ketchup containing corn syrup. Yet I have a feeling that it' illegal to have Dunkin Donuts' cinnamon coffee flavoring - not syrup - containing glycol, but doesn't taste sweet at all. Someone just advised me via email, that we cannot use pure vanilla extract, which is only vanilla bean in water with 4% alcohol - not like it's rum. I have been using it in such things as Siggis vanilla yogurt, butternut squash and coffee.

Breadcrumbs can be used, but can flour be used in cooking? We can have corn occasionally. is it okay to use cornstarch as a thickener for something like gravy?

It would appear that these questionable/illegal ingredients would have little impact, if you are otherwise following the diet, especially if not used often.

Also, do you know how often we can have yogurt, and do we have to have a protein with it?

I realize that no one, other than Julie's employees, is authorized to give advice. Just interested in other participants' thoughts.

Note: I do read ingredients at times, but nothing more on the labels, as the nutritional values do not apply to this diet.

  5. We aren't supposed to read ingredient labels, because Julie allowed us some things like condiments as a "gift" to us, even though they may contain some sugars.

No flour or cornstarch are allowed to thicken gravies.

Julie recommends twice a week on the Siggi's yogurt, and yes, you have to have an equal amount of meat with it.

No coffee flavorings are allowed at all. We can have milk in coffee, period.

Don't overthink it- do what she tells you, just because. It doesn't matter if it makes sense to our conscious brains or not. When you want to argue with yourself about whether things make sense, you're simply making it harder on yourself. When someone asks me why I can't have something, my response of "Because Julie said I can't" is all I need to know.

  6. Hi Rose,

I try not to get caught up in the details. I too left each session thinking.... Oh my goodness, I didn't hear a thing she said. :)

    1. Equal amounts of meat/veggies.
    2. Siggi's Yogurt - 2x's/wk with protein. I don't eat this.
    3. Condiments - I only use mustard, never ketchup
    4. Breadcrumbs if they are in the recipe. Ie..meatloaf
    5. Limited deli meats,
    6. Limited cheese. I do use some goat cheese but have tried to stay away from sliced cheese (see Theresa's earlier post)

This is a fantastic blog with informed KH graduates. Keep the questions coming, because they just might be something that one of us might want the answer to as well.

  7. The key to breadcrumbs is you only use them inside of something that has a lot of meat. Crabcakes and stuffed mushrooms are NOT allowed, so don't start playing head games with breadcrumbs. Make sure there is a lot of meat in the mixture.

Never add breadcrumbs as a topping to anything.

    Great feedback Jane - thanks!

  8. Thanks for all advice. I have yet to use breadcrumbs. I was using that as an example.

  9. Rose,
Some of the things Julie tells you not to do are to break habits and to help you stay away from behavior that will take you down a rat hole. For example, flavored coffees - that's like a "treat" - really we shouldn't have treats. We got to the place we are because we "treated" ourselves too much.

For what it is worth - don't question, stay the course. Stay strong! She will make you successful. :)
