The Cold Season is Upon Us

I have, like much of Vermont it seems, a cold right now, and was concerned about what I could use for the cough, since usually I use this wonderful herbal cough syrup, but it does have fructose in it.  I tried the Fisherman's Friend, and the menthol, which I hate, was enough to make me sick.  So I asked the pharmacist if there were any cough remedies which were not sweet.  It turns out that Mucinex is now putting Guafenisine (the active ingredient in most expectorants) in capsules....no sweeteners added, because they don't have to mask anything.  Will it work as well?  Time will tell, but I wanted to get this out there to others who may be hacking away.

  1. Doesn't work - and neither does the Fisherman's Friend...it's not an expectorant. But I did discover that the herbal cough syrup I usually use comes in a sugar free (no sugar substitutes) version and will get it today. Need some sleep.

  2. Call Julie's office and see what they recommend. I know she has said at times to follow your doctors instructions.

  3. Thanks Linda, but I need something for today and tonight. It turns out that the sugar free herbal mixture does have a bit of sorbitol in it, but I'm going for it anyway. It is not particularly sweet, and I am not drawn to it at all-it is licorice flavored which I hate - but it works and I don't want to do a third night of no sleep. That will not help me recover. It has slippery elm and all kinds of soothing herbs. I feel like I need to use my common sense about this one....and I am confident that it will not derail me.

  4. Julie has mentioned for medicinal purposes, you do what you have to do. If you have a stomach bug, you do what you have to to survive it. Not your free will. Hope you feel better soon!

  5. Thanks so much twingles! I had decided, but your note puts me much more at ease. Yes. this is not coming out of some desire for sweetness....if I could find something with no sweeteners that would allow me to stop choking and to sleep, that would be my free will choice. But the option doesn't seem to exist.

  6. Julie is also ok with Zycam products. I also will use Mucinex products. Good luck and feel better Eva!

  7. Used the Zycam lozenges and the herbal cough syrup and have had no problem with any increased desire for sweets. I think, as Julie has pointed out, that a huge part of it is intention.
